Within are candid responses from the community regarding the importance of recreation and potential adverse effects of losing it on quality of life for local residents.

Ericksen asks DNR to delay closure of Slide Mountain bike trails

OLYMPIA…Sen. Doug Ericksen, R-Ferndale, today sent a letter to Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark asking him to suspend the Department of Natural Resources’ plan to decommission the mountain-bike trail system on Slide Mountain at the North Fork Nooksack River. The work is set to begin Monday.

The trail system, which is user-built, is not an authorized recreational area and one member of the off-road vehicle community has insisted that if motorized-vehicle user groups are denied access, all access should be denied.

Ericksen said “I have asked for time to review all documents related to the environmental and management problems perceived by DNR; communications with county officials, mountain-bike organizations, neighbors to the area and other interested parties; and any complaints regarding mountain-bike activities in the area.

“I am very concerned about this proposed closure. I believe strongly that public lands should be as open and available as possible for public recreational activities.

“There are no authorized recreational areas on DNR land in Whatcom County. The user-built mountain-bike trail system is a reflection of the need for such recreational opportunities.”

MAPLE FALLS - A downhill trail system that mountain bikers say is among the best in the world will be closed Monday, April 2, because it was built illegally on Department of Natural Resources land.

Bicycling organizations have appealed to the state to keep the trails on Slide Mountain, on the north fork of the Nooksack River, open until an interim solution can be found, but state officials say they have no choice.

Matt Shelton - Whatcom Trails CO-OP President

Whatcom County Re-conveyance

Hi all,

Over the past month or so, there have been 1-2 people going to each Whatcom County Council meeting to show continued support for the Whatcom County Reconveyance. These folks have been from all walks of life and each of us speak about different elements related to the reconveyance. Mitch Friedman (conservationnw.org) has been coordinating this effort...thank you Mitch! Last night, Dan Probst and I attended to show our support.

The Reconveyance wasn’t on the agenda (we knew that), so I spoke during the open session about the value of recreation and trails to the community (quality of life, eco-tourism dollars, etc.) – all the while protecting the watershed and minimizing side slope instability. I also discussed the trailbuilding experience and support that our community can provide Whatcom County Parks to help offset any design/building/maintenance costs associated with the park. As some of you know, the cost of maintaining the future park along with the potential lost taxes have been the biggest hurdle. Darrell Scofield also spoke about business owners/creators who live here and moved here specifically because of the access to our forests and the value of eco-tourism to their businesses.

It’s looking like things are falling in place for a successful vote and I’ll let folks know when that will take place. When that does happen, we’ll need emails/letters written in support to county councilmembers and folks to attend the council meeting to speak in support of the reconveyance.

I know alot of you know odin, (aka flippensweet) and some may not, Odin is a big part of this riding community. Unfortunately last night his 10 year old son Caleb had a terrible accident, I'm not clear of any of the details, all I know is that caleb is in the hospital at harborview in Seattle, and on life support. Odin is the type of person who would never turn his back on anyone in need. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. His family is the same way. Caleb is a great kid, full of life. Please take time to send some healing vibes and thoughts and prayers to Odins son and family! Someone on Facebook has started a paypal account to help with the medical bills that will be stacking up. Help Save Galbraith Mountain

Friends,

Our access to recreate on Galbraith Mountain is slowly being pulled away from us.
The current landowners inherited the land in 2010 during the financial crisis and
have no interest in owning the land. Just yesterday, we were notified that the
WMBCs stewardship agreement is about to be revoked. This is serious... read more in the comments.

The NW Cup kicks off the 2011 race season bigger and badder than ever! We are proud to add a new venue to our series at Skibowl, Mt. Hood for 2 of the 5 rounds.
Anyone whos been there knows that Petr Kakes and his Hurricane Racing crew host a top shelf event on a mountain that provides REAL downhill action!

For the third year in a row, we will be kicking off the season with the opening round of the Pro GRT the weekend before the Sea Otter Classic, priming the region for
a World Cup atmosphere once again.

I was fortunate enough to watch the pre-release of this during Crankworx and I've gotta say this movie absolutely blew minds. It's like Planet Earth meets the Collective and there were parts where I was literally speechless (hard to believe with me, I know!). There was one particular section about trailbuilding that is going to speak to a lot of the folks around here.

WTC Annual Clean Up

We had a great turnout!
34 volunteers from Whatcom Trails and the Rainier RIdge Rams combined forces to clean up our valued recreational space at the North Fork.
In a four hour clean up we managed to COMPLETELY fill a 40 cubic yard dumpster!
Sadly we could have filled two more, with ease.
Cleaning up mainly illegally dumped trash, shooting targets, and everything in between, this is an effort that will continue to emphasize who cares about where they recreate and how much of a positive impact we can make when being proactive and working together.
Plus how can you beat a BBQ in December followed by a little "recreation"?

What: Trash pick up at the trail heads we all love, plus some other key sites.

When: Saturday, December 19th, 2009; 10:00 am - when the dust settles.

Why: To ease the strain on the environment and the potential for DNR to restrict access to the area.

How: Volunteer power and of course BBQ and Beverages.

Lets get dirty and show goodwill towards our favorite playground. See you there.

Challenge: something that by its nature or character serves as a call to battle, contest, special effort, etc.

Some of us raced the first event 3 years ago in the pissing rain with a freshly cut track. If you stayed on your bike you did pretty well. It looks like this time around it will be dry so come on out. It's Probably one of the most techincally demanding and steep race courses you will find. Below: Picture of the wet course, and Vaughn getting angry on the track in full rain gear and rubber boots.

Fluidride Cup 2, May 1-3.

The Fluidride Cup kicked off to an impressive start, with 410 racers competing at the first event. The second race promises to be even bigger. It is the first race in the Pro Gravity Tour Series, the new national pro DH series, with a $5000 pro purse. Over 100 pro racers are expected to attend, so ODS has chosen to limit amateurs to 350 racers. If you want to race, you should preregister NOW!
